Kingsbury Park

Kingsbury Park is a sprawling nature reserve just east of Dunstable that feels genuinely off the beaten path, despite being minutes from the Chiltern Hills. It's a proper working landscape - a mix of woodland, wetland, and grassland where you're more likely to spot a heron than a tour group.

What draws people here is the walking. There are decent trails threading through the reserve, and the birdwatching is decent if you're into that sort of thing. In spring the woodland floor comes alive with bluebells. Summer's good for spotting dragonflies around the wetland areas. It's not dramatic scenery - no sweeping vistas or dramatic cliffs - but it's the kind of place that rewards a slow meander.

Families with young kids might find it a bit quiet after an hour or so, unless they're genuinely interested in nature spotting. Walkers and bird enthusiasts will get far more out of it. The paths can be muddy, especially in winter, so decent boots are a must.

If you're based at Merlin Farm Camping near Whipsnade Zoo or Woodlands Caravan Site, Kingsbury makes a solid morning activity before heading elsewhere in the Chilterns. It's free to access and you can spend as little or as long as you like here. Best visited outside school holidays when it's quieter, and go early morning if you want the wildlife to yourself.
