About Jackdaw Nick

The walk up Jackdaw Nick rewards you with unobstructed views across the Pennines that frankly beat many of the more famous peaks in the area. It's a proper fell, not some manicured tourist route - steep in places, boggy in others, and all the better for it.

From Skipton, you're looking at getting yourself to the Malham area first, then tackling the approach on foot. The summit sits at just over 400 metres, which sounds modest until you're grinding up the final section into the wind. What makes it worthwhile is the perspective you get across Wharfedale and out towards Ingleborough. On a clear day the visibility is striking.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination for dawdlers - you need proper boots and the fitness to manage the climb without stopping every two minutes. Kids aged ten upwards will manage it fine if they're used to hills, but younger ones might find it tedious. There's nothing much at the top itself, no café, no shelter, just the view and the achievement.

Allow two to three hours depending on your pace and how long you linger at the summit. Spring and early autumn are best - it can be a slog in high summer when the boggy bits are at their worst. If you're camping at Breaks Fold Farm Glamping nearby, this makes a solid half-day adventure to fill out a longer stay in the area.
