Hunterheck Hill

The walk up Hunterheck Hill from Moffat takes about forty minutes if you're steady on your feet, and the effort pays off with proper views across the Lowlands - moorland rolling away in every direction, with the Southern Uplands humping along the horizon. It's not a dramatic peak, mind you. No rocky scramble or anything daring. Just a straightforward hill walk with a decent gradient that'll get your heart going but won't leave you gasping.

Who should bother? Walkers who want an honest afternoon without needing a full day, and families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground. The view from the top is worth the slog - on a clear day you can see why this corner of Dumfries and Galloway draws people back. It's moorland proper, open and working, not prettified.

Start early if you can. The path can be boggy depending on recent weather, and afternoon mist rolls in quicker than you'd expect in these hills. Give yourself two hours total for the round trip with time to stand about at the summit and catch your breath.

If you're staying at one of the caravan sites near Moffat - the Camping and Caravanning Club Site is closest at just over a mile from town - this makes a solid morning or early afternoon excursion. Pairs well with a pub lunch back in Moffat afterwards. Nothing fancy required, just decent boots and a weather eye on the sky.
