Hucken Tor

The walk up Hucken Tor rewards you with proper moorland views the moment you crest the slope. It's not a dramatic peak - more a chunky granite outcrop that rises decisively from the rolling Dartmoor landscape - but that's rather the point. You get the payoff without the scramble.

From the top, visibility across the moor stretches for miles on a clear day. The tor itself isn't crowded with tourists taking selfies, which means you actually get space to stand and take it in. The rock formations are worth a proper look too, weathered and angular in that distinctly Devonian way.

Walkers will absolutely get the most from this. It's close enough to Tavistock to make a morning jaunt, and the approach paths are well-trodden without feeling overdone. You're looking at roughly ninety minutes there and back, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. Children aged seven upwards will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the final push tedious.

Combine it with a base at Langstone Manor Holiday Park - just a mile and a half away - and you've got easy access to serious Dartmoor walking without needing to drive far each day. The proximity to Dartmoor National Park itself means you can string together multiple walks across the week. No facilities at the tor itself, so bring water and whatever snacks appeal. Weather on the moor shifts quickly, so decent boots matter more than the difficulty of the walk.
