Horse Head

The walk up to Horse Head, near Leyburn, rewards you with one of those views that makes the effort genuinely worthwhile. It's a proper fell top - nothing fancy, just clean moorland and sweeping views across Wensleydale. On a clear day you can see for miles, which is exactly what you want when you've huffed your way up there.

The summit itself is modest - a cairn and a fell marker, the kind of simple peak that feels honest. The real draw is the 360-degree panorama. North towards the Lake District fells, south to Pen-y-ghent and the Yorkshire Three Peaks, east across the dale itself. Walkers will get the most out of this one. It's not a casual stroll - allow a good three to four hours return from the nearest car park - but it's accessible enough for anyone with decent boots and a bit of stamina.

Timing matters. Early morning clears the mist faster, and late afternoon light across the moorland is genuinely lovely. If staying at Stablefell Holidays or Ribblesdale Pods nearby, this makes a cracking half-day expedition. You won't need to pay anything - it's open fell - but bring water and a map.

It's the kind of walk where you'll see why people bother with the Dales at all. No crowds, no facilities, just moorland and the weather. That's rather the point.
