Holm Park - Moffat

The River Annan curves through Holm Park like it's got all day to get where it's going, and that's rather the point of being here. This nature reserve sits on the edge of Moffat, a proper hill-town with proper views, and it's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no gift shop, no admission charge, just woodland and water doing what they do best.

Walkers will find the paths straightforward enough, threading through mixed woodland with the river never far off. The real draw is the wildlife. You're looking at red squirrels if you're lucky, roe deer if you're luckier, and the riverbank's decent for birdwatching year-round. Spring and early summer when the place is full of nesting birds - that's when it comes alive. Allow two hours to do it properly without rushing; you could dash round in forty minutes if you're just after a leg-stretch.

It's ideal if you're camped at the Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site just down the road, or using Riverside Holiday Park a couple of miles out. Families with young kids might find it a touch dull unless they're keen on spotting wildlife - there's no playground or visitor centre to soften the edges. But serious naturalists, birdwatchers, and anyone wanting a genuine break from the Moffat fuss will find this time well spent. The Scottish Lowlands roll out beyond the trees, and on a clear day you've got space to breathe.
