Holes Wood

Walk into Holes Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper ancient woodland. The canopy's thick enough that even on bright days it feels like you're moving through dappled green shadow, with gnarled oaks and tangled undergrowth on either side of well-trodden paths. It's the kind of forest that looks like it's been here forever - which, frankly, it probably has.

This is a genuine working woodland just outside Warwick, not some manicured nature reserve. That means you get the real thing: fallen logs rotting back into the earth, patches of bluebells in spring if you time it right, and plenty of bird life if you're paying attention. The paths wind through without being obvious about it, so there's always the sense you might discover something around the next corner. Kids will have a field day scrambling over stumps and hunting for wildlife, though there's not much infrastructure - bring a proper coat and expect mud.

Allow two to three hours if you want to actually explore rather than just rush through. It works brilliantly as part of a wider woodland walk around Warwick, and if you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites like Green Gates or The Apple Farm, it's close enough for a morning ramble before heading into town. Free to access, naturally - you're just wandering through actual forest, not paying for the privilege. Go mid-week if crowds bother you; weekends draw more families, but it's large enough that you won't feel hemmed in.
