You can't go inside - it's still very much operational - but the exterior is worth seeing, particularly if you're driving between Tavistock and the open moorland beyond. The building itself is the thing. Moorland surrounds it on all sides, which creates an oddly desolate contrast between the prison's fortress-like grimness and the wild, empty landscape stretching away in every direction. Most visitors pause for photographs rather than lingering. It's not a destination in itself, more of a "while you're passing" moment that packs genuine atmosphere.

This works best for history buffs and anyone with a morbid curiosity about Britain's penal past. Kids might find the looming walls momentarily interesting but won't want to spend long there. The real value comes if you're already exploring Dartmoor National Park - which sits just 3.7 miles away - or based at one of the nearby holiday parks like Langstone Manor, where you can easily build it into a broader moorland tour. October through March is when the prison looks most forbidding, shrouded in mist and low cloud. Summer visits feel less atmospheric, though the moor around it stays wild whatever the season. Give it twenty minutes maximum, then head out into the actual wilderness nearby.
