High Howes

High Howes sits at 568 metres above Kendal, a proper fell walk rather than a gentle stroll. The climb takes you through open moorland with views that stretch across the Lake District's southern reaches - on a clear day you can pick out the Pennines to the east and the Irish Sea glinting to the west.

It's not a destination peak, truth be told. Most walkers use it as part of a longer route through the fells around the Kentmere Valley, but if you're after a half-day outing from Kendal itself, it's absolutely doable. Count on two hours to the summit and back if you're fit, longer if you meander. The terrain's rough in places - proper walking boots matter here - but there's nothing technical about it.

Families with older kids (say, nine-plus) will manage fine on a decent weather day. Younger children might find the exposed moorland a bit bleak, especially if the cloud rolls in. Walkers and fell runners get the most from it; the views reward the effort without being showy.

Stay at Crossgate Luxury Glamping if you want proper comfort after a day on the hills - it's only 5.5 miles away and their reviews speak for themselves. Sykeside Camping Park does solid bases too if you're doing multiple walks across the area. Both put you within easy reach of the Kentmere circuit and other fells hereabouts. There's no visitor centre or facilities on the fell itself, so bring water and something to eat.
