High Ground

The walk up High Ground from Clitheroe is proper rewarding, even if the summit itself is more modest than its name suggests. You're looking at roughly an hour's hike through Lancashire moorland, with the real payoff being the 360-degree views across the Ribble Valley once you're up top. On a clear day, you can see Pendle Hill and the surrounding fells stretching out in every direction - it's the kind of vista that makes the leg burn worth it.

Families with reasonably fit kids will manage this fine. The path is clear enough, though it gets a bit boggy in patches after rain. Walkers doing a longer loop through the area - perhaps combining it with Clitheroe Castle on the way back - will find it slots in nicely. History types might be less gripped; there's not much to the place itself, just the views and the walk.

It's free, obviously. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking your time and want to linger at the top with a flask. Early morning or late afternoon light works better than midday glare.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Holgates Ribble Valley is closest at 3.5 miles - this makes for a solid morning outing before heading back for lunch. Thornton Hall and Shay Gate Farm are decent options too, both within striking distance. The moorland walk feels like proper Lancashire, with none of the Lake District crowds, though equally, it's not a showstopper. Worth doing if you're in the valley, but don't rearrange your holiday around it.
