Yarlside Hill

Standing at 388 metres, this modest fell offers surprisingly expansive views across the Ribble Valley without the lung-busting effort required by its loftier neighbours. The walk from Clitheroe takes you through proper Lancashire countryside - stone walls, sheep fields and the occasional grouse bursting from the heather.

The summit itself isn't much to write home about - a grassy top with a small cairn - but the panorama stretches from Pendle Hill in the east to the Yorkshire Dales beyond. On clear days, you can pick out the distinctive profile of Ingleborough.

Families with older children (say 10 plus) will manage the ascent comfortably, though toddlers might struggle with the steeper sections near the top.
