Tweed Hill

Climbing boots optional but recommended for this modest Pennine peak that sits quietly above Clitheroe, offering surprisingly good views across the Ribble Valley for relatively little effort. Tweed Hill won't trouble serious fell walkers - at just over 400 metres, it's more of a brisk afternoon walk than a proper mountain expedition.

The ascent from the nearest road takes about 45 minutes through typical Lancashire moorland, with the final approach revealing panoramic views across to Pendle Hill and the Yorkshire Dales beyond. On a clear day, you can spot the Lake District fells on the horizon. The summit itself is unmarked and rather unremarkable - just a grassy top with a few scattered stones.

Families with older children will manage this easily enough, though the pathways can be boggy after rain and there's nothing here to entertain younger kids once you reach the top. The real appeal is the 360-degree outlook and the sense of achievement without the crowds you'd find on more famous peaks nearby.

Walkers staying at one of the holiday parks around Clitheroe - Holgates Ribble Valley or Parkdean's Todber Valley site are both within easy driving distance - could easily tackle this as a half-day trip before heading back for a proper pub lunch in town.
