High Currack Rigg

The walk up High Currack Rigg rewards you with proper views across County Durham's rolling moorland - nothing fancy, just honest northern fell country. It's a straightforward hike from Bishop Auckland, taking the best part of an hour to reach the summit depending on your pace and the weather.

Once up there, you're treated to long sightlines across the Pennines and back toward the Eden Valley. On a clear day it's worth every footfall. The peak itself is bare and windswept - no summit cairn or shelter to speak of - so it's the kind of place you reach, take in the view, have a sandwich, then head back down again.

Families with decent walkers in tow will find it manageable. Young kids might struggle with the climb, though it's not technical. Serious hikers use it as part of longer loops linking the nearby fells. The moorland around it is typical Pennine terrain - rough grass, a bit boggy after rain, and the wind has a bite even in summer.

There's no charge for access and no facilities at the top, so bring water and something to eat. Allow three to four hours if you're going at a relaxed pace. Early autumn or late spring are best - summer can be a bit claggy with midges, and winter demands proper kit.

Stay at Leekworth Caravan Park or Mickleton Mill, both within five miles, and you've got a solid base for exploring the Durham hills on foot. It's honest fell-walking, not Instagram-famous, which is exactly why it works.
