About High Brown Hill

The walk up High Brown Hill starts deceptively gentle, but don't let that fool you - the final push to the summit is properly steep. From the top you get sweeping views across the Dales that on a clear day stretch for miles, with Skipton and the surrounding moorland laid out below like a map. It's the kind of view that makes the slog worthwhile, though I'll be honest, it's not a walk for dawdlers.

This is proper walker country. You're looking at a good couple of hours up and down depending on your fitness and which route you take, and there's no café at the top or facilities to speak of. Families with young children might find it a bit much, but teenagers who don't mind a challenge will actually enjoy it. History buffs won't find anything particularly significant up here - it's about the landscape itself, the moorland ecosystem, and on a windy day, testing your balance.

Go on a weekday if possible. Weekends bring out the crowds, and the narrow paths get a bit congested. Early morning is best for clear views before the cloud rolls in - Yorkshire weather being what it is, you need to time this right.

If you're staying at Breaks Fold Farm Glamping just outside Skipton, this makes a proper full-day outing. Combine it with a walk through Skipton town itself afterwards, or loop it with other Dales walks in the area. Worth the detour, especially if you've got legs and decent boots.
