Herne Hole Tor

The granite outcrop rises abruptly from the moorland south of Tavistock, commanding views across Dartmoor that stretch for miles on a clear day. Herne Hole Tor isn't dramatic in the way some of Devon's peaks are - no jagged edges or dizzying drops - but it's got genuine character and the walk rewards you properly.

The climb itself takes about twenty minutes from the nearest parking, which means most walkers can tackle it without breaking a sweat. Once up top, you get proper 360-degree moorland: rolling hills, scattered settlements, and on good days, a real sense of isolation despite being so close to civilisation. The tor itself is small enough that you won't spend hours here, but that's rather the point - it's a proper bite-sized hill with a proper payoff.

This works brilliantly as part of a Dartmoor day out rather than a standalone destination. If you're staying at Langstone Manor, it's only twenty minutes' drive away and pairs well with exploring the wider national park. The families I've seen up here tend to be the outdoorsy sort - not toddlers in pushchairs, but kids old enough to manage rough moorland underfoot. Walkers love it because it's accessible without being trivial, and the views alone justify the effort.

Go when the weather's cooperating. Rain and mist turn this into a grey trudge, but catch it on a bright morning and you'll understand why people keep coming back to this corner of the moor.
