Hendra Camp

The Iron Age fort at Hendra Camp sits on a hilltop near Tavistock, commanding views across the moor that feel properly ancient. Earthwork ramparts still define the settlement - you can walk the perimeter and pick out the defensive ditches that would have protected whoever lived here two thousand years ago. It's not flashy. There are no visitor facilities, no interpretation boards, no gift shop. Just you, the wind, and the slow realisation that people have been farming and fighting on this spot since before the Romans showed up.

The walk up takes fifteen minutes from the road, and it's genuinely rewarding for history buffs and anyone who likes gritty, unglamorous archaeology. Kids might find it dull if they're expecting something more interactive - it's a field with bumps, really - but keen walkers will appreciate the moorland setting and the chance to read the landscape itself. Allow an hour if you're thorough, half that if you're just after a quick look.

Free access, no facilities, and weather-dependent. Go when it's dry - boggy moorland isn't fun in the rain. It slots neatly into a Dartmoor break, especially if you're based at Langstone Manor or exploring the national park proper. The combination of Bronze Age remains and open moorland means you're getting proper landscape archaeology without the crowds. Worth the detour if you're already in the area; not worth driving down specially.
