Hen Stones

Hen Stones sits above Skipton, a proper fell-top with real Yorkshire grit to it. The walk up takes the best part of an hour from the car park, and you're climbing proper stone and moorland the whole way - nothing manicured about it. Once you're up there, the view flattens your complaints instantly. You can see right across to Pendle Hill on a clear day, and the Pennine ridges roll away in every direction.

It's a walker's spot, no question. The kind of place where you need decent boots and shouldn't attempt it in thick cloud without a map. Kids who are comfortable on rough terrain will get a kick out of it - there's an old stone trig point at the summit that feels properly adventurous when you're eight years old. But younger children or anyone looking for an easy amble will find it tedious.

The real appeal is solitude. You won't fight crowds up here like you do on some of the more famous peaks. Pack a thermos and settle in for twenty minutes. The wind can be brutal, mind you, even when the valley's calm.

Stay nearby at Breaks Fold Farm Glamping just three miles away in Yorkshire - it's a solid base for tackling the local fells, or pair it with Catgill Farm for a longer trip. Either way, Hen Stones works best as part of a proper walking week rather than a quick tourist tick-off. Worth the effort if you're serious about moorland.
