Heber Hill

The walk up Heber Hill takes you straight into proper Ribble Valley terrain - limestone slopes, open moorland, and on a clear day, views across Lancashire that stretch for miles. It's not a particularly high fell at 380 metres, but don't let that fool you. The ascent is steep enough to get your heart going, and the ridge itself commands real attention.

This is walker country, full stop. If you're after a gentle amble with a café at the top, look elsewhere. What you get instead is a genuine fell walk within striking distance of Clitheroe, with the kind of rocky outcrops and sheep-dotted slopes that make the Ribble Valley special. The summit itself offers broad views across the Forest of Bowland and towards Pendle Hill - the type of vista that makes you understand why people came to hike here in the first place.

The walk works brilliantly as part of a wider holiday circuit. You're well-placed for Parkdean Resorts Todber Valley or Holgates Ribble Valley if you want a base with facilities, though neither offers the kind of convenience you'd get from a town centre. Shay Gate Farm Campsite is rougher around the edges but genuinely atmospheric if you're after something less manicured.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on fitness and how long you linger on top. Go on a weekday if possible - this isn't a honeypot, but midweek beats the weekend crowds. Families with teenage walkers will get plenty from it; younger children might find the climb tedious.
