Heath Mynd

The walk up Heath Mynd rewards you with proper views across Powys and into Shropshire - the sort of landscape that makes you understand why people moved to Mid Wales in the first place. It's not a mountain exactly, more a substantial hill that sits above Bishops Castle with enough elevation to feel genuinely achieved once you're up there.

From the top you get a real sense of the Marches terrain - rolling moorland, distant ridges, and on a clear day, the Welsh hills proper stretching westward. The walk itself takes somewhere between an hour and ninety minutes depending on your approach, and most routes aren't technically difficult, though the ground can be boggy in places.

This is one for walkers more than casual visitors. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks near Bishops Castle - Green Caravan Park and Foxholes are both within three miles - it's an obvious half-day outing. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger children might find the boggy bits frustrating. The peak draws fewer crowds than the famous Shropshire hills, which is precisely why it's worth the detour.

Timing matters here. Spring and autumn tend to be drier, and you'll want decent visibility to make the views worth the effort. Winter can be muddy and grey, which dampens the appeal. There's no visitor infrastructure on the summit itself - no café, no facilities - so come prepared. But that's rather the point. Heath Mynd feels like actual walking, not tourism.
