Heald Brow

The walk up Heald Brow is over almost before you've caught your breath. Rising just 270 metres from the outskirts of Carnforth, this modest fell rewards you with views across Morecambe Bay that genuinely stop you in your tracks - wide open water, the far coast, and on a clear day, the Lake District hills beyond.

It's not a trek. Most people do it in under an hour from the car park, which makes it ideal for families with younger legs or anyone after a proper walk that doesn't demand half the day. The route itself is straightforward fell walking - grassy slopes, decent paths - and the summit cairn is unmissable. In autumn and winter the visibility here is often excellent; summer visitors might find themselves peering through haze.

This works best as a morning outing paired with one of the nearby parks like Holgates or Fell End, especially if you're camping locally. It's the sort of place you tick off mid-holiday without it dominating your plans. The gradient is gentle enough that even reluctant walkers won't complain, though it does get a bit exposed at the top when the wind picks up.

Go when the weather's set fair. There's nothing here for bad visibility - no shelter, no facilities on the hill itself - so check conditions first. The real payoff is that uncluttered view of the bay; it's worth doing it properly rather than trudging up in cloud.
