Hard Head

The walk up to Hard Head from Bodmin is steep and a bit relentless, but you get proper views across Bodmin Moor once you're there. It's a proper Cornish granite tor - all craggy and weather-beaten, nothing fancy, but genuinely dramatic when the light hits it right.

The summit itself isn't huge. You're looking at maybe twenty minutes at the top before your legs start getting cold and you wonder if you should've brought more layers. But that's the thing about moorland peaks - they're honest. No visitor centre, no gift shop, just you and the wind and some genuinely wild landscape stretching out toward the coast.

Walkers will get the most out of Hard Head. If you're after a scramble or technical climbing, you'll be disappointed. This is straightforward fell-walking territory, the kind of thing families with teenagers could manage if they're used to hills. Young kids would find it a slog without proper motivation.

There's no charge, obviously - it's moorland. Allow about two hours round trip from the car park, depending on your fitness. Go on a clear day or frankly don't bother. Mist just turns it into a soggy trudge through heather.

If you're camping at Camp De Lank, Hard Head makes a proper morning outing before you settle in. Combine it with a wander round some of the other tors on the moor and you've got a solid day. Bodmin town centre is useful for supplies and a decent pub afterwards.
