Hangingshaw Hill

The walk up Hangingshaw Hill rewards you with proper views across the rolling Lowlands, and it's the kind of modest peak that gets overlooked in favour of fancier summits further north. Starting from near Moffat, the approach is straightforward - moorland underfoot, no scrambling - which means families with older kids and regular walkers will manage it without fuss. The summit itself isn't dramatic, but on a clear day you get a real sense of how the landscape opens up here, with the Southern Uplands rolling away in every direction.

It takes roughly two hours there and back from the main paths around the hill, so it's not a full-day commitment. That's actually its strength - you can knock it out without it dominating your schedule. The terrain is fairly exposed, so wind and weather can shift quickly; pick a decent day or you'll just be staring at cloud. It's free, obviously, being moorland.

If you're based at Howslack Farm or Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site - both excellent pitches just under five miles away - Hangingshaw fits nicely into a few days exploring the area without feeling like a must-do tick-box. It pairs well with gentler valley walks if someone in the group isn't keen on too much climbing. Walkers who like solitude will appreciate it. Those after dramatic vistas or rare mountain flowers should probably look elsewhere.
