Hag Wood

Deep woodland just a few miles outside Berwick-upon-Tweed, Hag Wood is the sort of place locals know about and visitors miss entirely. The forest floor here is thick with moss and fallen branches, proper ancient feeling even if you're only ten minutes from the town. There's a decent walk through it - nothing strenuous, just enough to feel like you've actually gone somewhere rather than wandered around a car park.

It's dead good for families who want the kids to burn some energy without committing to a full hillside trek. Walkers passing through Northumberland often overlook it in favour of bigger names, which is their loss. The woodland has that quiet quality you don't get in managed forests - less manicured, more honest. Bring proper shoes though; it gets boggy in patches after rain.

You'd want to allow an hour or so here, maybe ninety minutes if you're in no rush and stop to look around. There's something about woods this old that makes you slow down. If you're staying at one of the caravan sites nearby - Chainbridge Touring is closest at just over four miles - this makes a cracking half-day activity without needing transport further afield. Pairs well with a wander around Berwick itself, either before or after. It's the sort of place that justifies a longer visit to the area rather than standing alone as a destination.
