Paxton Brick & Tile Works

The industrial archaeology at Paxton Brick and Tile Works sits a couple of miles south of Berwick-upon-Tweed, a proper slice of Victorian manufacturing heritage that most visitors to the Scottish Borders completely overlook. What you're looking at are the remains of kilns, clay workings, and the infrastructure of a business that once supplied building materials across the north. It's not flashy - there are no interactive displays or reconstructed workers' cottages - but if you're into industrial history, the bones of the operation tell their own story.

Walking the site, you can make out the layout of the works and spot pottery fragments in the spoil heaps. The nearby River Tweed provided transport for goods heading downstream. It's the kind of place that rewards a bit of time and imagination - better suited to history enthusiasts than families after a quick photo stop. Allow an hour if you're genuinely interested, less if you're just passing through.

For a caravan base, Chainbridge Touring Caravan Site sits barely two miles away, making this an easy morning walk from the site. Haven Berwick Holiday Centre and Berwick Seaview are both within striking distance too, useful if you're spending a week in the area and want to mix industrial archaeology with coastal walks and the town's fortifications. Free access as far as we can tell, though there's nothing on-site to speak of - go properly prepared.
