Witches Knowe

The name alone makes it worth the trip. Witches Knowe is a modest hill near Berwick-upon-Tweed with views across the Tweed valley and down towards the Scottish border - proper Borderlands scenery, windswept and rolling. The peak itself isn't particularly high or dramatic, but that's rather the point. It's a proper walk rather than a slog, the kind of thing you can knock out in an afternoon without needing special kit.

The folklore is strong here - locals will tell you stories about witches and curses if you ask around Berwick, though the landscape speaks louder than the legends. On a clear day you get real sight lines across farmland and moorland, and the quiet is the thing you'll notice most. No crowds, no visitor centre, just you and the Northumberland wind.

Families with primary-age kids will manage it fine, though there's nothing to do once you're up there except look about and head back down. Walkers doing a longer route through the area will find it a natural waypoint. History types might appreciate the Borders context - this is properly old disputed territory.

The nearest town is Berwick-upon-Tweed, where you'll find food and facilities before or after. If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby holiday parks - Haven Berwick is closest at 3.4 miles, or Ord House at 4 miles - this makes an easy addition to a longer walking day. Allow 90 minutes return from the car park. It's free, naturally, and accessible year-round, though winter winds can be fierce.
