Gwaun y Llwyni

The walk up Gwaun y Llwyni from Dolgellau is the kind of route that sneaks up on you. It's not Wales's most famous peak, which means the paths are quieter than you'd expect for something this rewarding. From the summit, you get sweeping views across the Mawddach estuary and into Cader Idris territory - proper stunning on a clear day.

The climb itself takes roughly two hours from town, depending on your fitness and the route you take. It's steep in patches but nothing that requires scrambling or special equipment. The terrain is moorland and rough grass, so decent boots matter. Spring and early summer are best if you want to avoid the worst of the weather and see the hills in their best light.

This is solid territory for walkers wanting something a bit quieter than the honeypot summits. You won't find cafes or visitor facilities up there, so bring water and a packed lunch if you're making a morning of it. The views reward you thoroughly without the crowds.

The park sits you perfectly for exploring this corner of Gwynedd without having to drive far. Dolgellau itself is a proper working Welsh town with decent pubs and shops if you need to resupply before heading out.
