Grey Crag

The walk up Grey Crag is steep enough to make you question your fitness levels, but the payoff is properly worth it. You're looking at a modest fell that doesn't demand technical gear or scrambling skills, just decent boots and legs willing to burn on the ascent from the Kendal side. The summit sits at around 760 metres, offering views across the Kentmere valley that stretch all the way to the High Street fells if the weather's behaving. It's the sort of walk that takes about two hours round trip once you're moving, so good for an afternoon rather than a full day's outing.

This is walker territory, full stop. Don't bring the toddlers expecting an easy stroll, but teenagers who can manage a proper hill will find it satisfying. The rock at the top is craggy enough to feel like proper mountaineering without actually being dangerous. On a clear day you get a real sense of how the Lake District unfolds beneath you. Most people tackling Grey Crag are out from Kendal or staying at Parkdean Resorts Limefitt Holiday Park, which sits conveniently close by. The fell mixes well with other valley walks in the area - you're not looking at a standalone trip so much as part of a broader walking week.

Go in decent weather. Cloud cover reduces it to a trudge uphill through mist. Spring and autumn tend to be best - summer attracts crowds, winter brings scrambling difficulty the fell doesn't warrant.
