Greenfield Reservoir

The reservoir sits in a valley that feels surprisingly remote given how close you are to civilisation. It's a working water supply, so don't expect theme park facilities, but that's precisely what makes it appealing. The walk around the perimeter takes you past moorland and patches of woodland, with the water reflecting whatever the sky's doing - grey and moody one day, almost Mediterranean the next.

Anglers come here regularly, and you'll spot them dotted along the banks with their gear. If you're not fishing, it's mainly a walking spot. The circuit isn't demanding, though the terrain can be boggy after rain, so proper footwear matters. Most people allow 90 minutes to two hours depending on pace and whether you stop to actually look at anything.

Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of wind and exposure will get something out of it. Younger children might find it a touch bleak - there's no playground, café, or anything to break up the walk. But if you're after fresh air and solitude without the crowds you'd find at more famous reservoirs, this delivers.

It works well as part of a broader moorland exploring day when you're based at one of the nearby parks like Secret Valley Escapes or Whitegate. Neither location is a major destination in its own right, but they're decent bases for tackling the surrounding Pennine walking. The reservoir itself won't fill a full afternoon, but it's worth the detour if you're in the area.
