Green Quarter

Green Quarter sits just outside Kendal and is the sort of spot locals know about but tourists often rush past on their way to Windermere. It's a proper fell with genuine walking appeal - the paths are well-maintained without feeling too groomed, and the views across the Kentish Valleys open up faster than you'd expect for a modest peak.

The ascent takes most people between 90 minutes and two hours depending on fitness and how often you stop. The summit rewards aren't dramatic - there's no trig point or fell-top pub - but that's partly the charm. You get clear sight lines to the bigger fells if visibility's kind, and on a good day you can pick out Windermere beyond the lower ground. Families with older children will find it manageable; younger kids might struggle with the sustained climb and loose stone near the top.

What makes Green Quarter worth the detour is that it feels less crowded than the honeypot peaks, yet stays accessible. It works brilliantly as part of a longer Kendal area itinerary - park at Windermere Camping and Caravanning Club Site and you're just a few miles away. The walk itself is free, of course. Morning visits work best if you want the fell to yourself; afternoons can draw local runners and dog walkers.

Allow a full half-day if you're not rushing. The actual hill takes two to three hours round-trip depending on your pace, and Kendal's worth an hour for lunch afterwards.
