Great Rigg

Standing at 766 metres, this Lake District fell offers one of the finest ridge walks in the central fells, with Grasmere sparkling below and the Langdale Pikes rising dramatically to the west. The summit sits on the popular Fairfield Horseshoe route, making it a proper destination for serious walkers rather than casual day-trippers.

Most people tackle Great Rigg as part of the classic horseshoe circuit from Rydal or Grasmere, though you can reach it more directly from Ambleside via the Scandale Pass. The views are absolutely cracking - you'll see right across to Helvellyn and the eastern fells, while the western aspect takes in the full sweep of the Langdale valley.

This isn't one for families with young children. The terrain can be boggy and the ascent is fairly relentless, requiring proper walking boots and decent fitness. Weather changes quickly up here too, so come prepared with layers and waterproofs.

Allow a full day if you're doing the horseshoe (six to eight hours), or about four hours for a there-and-back route. Spring through autumn offers the best conditions, though winter can be spectacular if you know what you're doing. The fell sits conveniently close to several holiday parks around Ambleside, with Lakeside Retreat Glamping being the highest-rated option for those wanting comfort after a hard day's walking.
