Graston Copse

Walking into Graston Copse feels like stepping properly off the beaten track - it's the kind of woodland that rewards you for bothering to find it rather than heading straight to the Golden Cap cliffs everyone bangs on about. The copse sits just inland from Bridport, and it's a genuine pocket of ancient forest with the tangled undergrowth and quiet you'd expect. Trees tower overhead, light filters through in that lovely dappled way, and you're likely to have the place largely to yourself even during school holidays.

It's excellent for families who don't mind a bit of mucking about among ferns and fallen branches - toddlers might struggle with the uneven ground, but kids aged five upwards will enjoy exploring. Walkers will find it peaceful rather than spectacular, and it works well as a quick detour if you're staying at any of the nearby parks like Freshwater Beach or Parkdean Resorts West Bay. The routes aren't formally marked that I could spot, so you're doing a gentle wander rather than following a strict trail.

Allow an hour if you're taking it easy, longer if you want to sit and actually notice things. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so bring what you need. The real appeal here is that it's free, undeveloped, and genuinely quiet - a proper contrast to the busier coastal spots nearby. Worth the detour if you're park-based and want a morning among the trees without travelling far.
