Burton Hill

Standing at 201 metres, this grassy summit offers panoramic views across the Dorset coast that'll make the modest climb worthwhile. Burton Hill sits just inland from Bridport, making it an easy escape from the seaside crowds when you fancy stretching your legs properly.

The walk up is gentle enough for most families, though toddlers might need a piggyback for the final stretch. From the top, you'll spot the distinctive limestone cliffs of the Jurassic Coast stretching east towards Weymouth, while West Bay's harbour sits directly below like a toy village. On clear days, the views reach right across Lyme Bay.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from Burton Hill, especially those staying at nearby holiday parks like West Bay or Freshwater Beach. It's the sort of hill that rewards you handsomely for minimal effort - always a winner in my book. The summit itself is fairly unremarkable, just open grassland really, but the 360-degree views more than compensate.

Allow about an hour for the round trip from Bridport, longer if you're planning to linger at the top with a flask and sandwiches. Early morning visits often provide the clearest visibility before coastal haze sets in. Proper walking boots aren't essential, but they'll help with grip on the steeper sections, particularly after rain when the chalk paths can get slippery.
