Cathole Copse

Ancient woodland doesn't get much more atmospheric than this patch of forest just outside Bridport. Cathole Copse is one of those proper old woods where the trees seem to have been growing since time began - all gnarled oaks and twisted hazel creating a canopy so thick that even on bright days, you're walking through dappled green light.

Dog walkers absolutely love it here, and you'll understand why the moment you step off the footpath into the trees. The undergrowth is thick enough to feel wild but not so dense that smaller children will struggle. Families with young explorers will find plenty to occupy them for a good hour or so - fallen logs to balance on, interesting fungi to spot, and if you're lucky, glimpses of red squirrels.

There's no formal car park or facilities, which keeps the crowds away but means you'll need to park considerately on nearby lanes. The wood connects to several public footpaths, so it works brilliantly as part of a longer countryside walk or just a quick nature fix.
