Granllyn Pool

A modest reservoir tucked into the Powys hills, Granllyn Pool is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan around. The water sits calm most days, ringed by rough moorland and a scattering of trees - nothing dramatic, but there's something restful about it. You can walk the perimeter if you're after a gentle couple of hours, though it's not signposted heavily and locals seem to know it better than visitors do.

It works best for people after a straightforward countryside walk rather than a major attraction. Families with young kids might find an hour enough unless they're keen on spotting waterfowl. The surrounding terrain is open moorland, so wind can be fierce and the weather changes fast - bring waterproofs even when it looks fine.

There's no obvious visitor infrastructure here. No café, no proper car park that I could see, no admission booth. You simply turn up and have a look about. That's partly the appeal if you value peace and quiet, though it does mean this isn't a destination in itself. It works far better as a walking break if you're already in the area - say, between Derwen Mill Holiday Park (less than a mile away) or Valley View if you're based at one of the caravan sites dotting the Powys valleys.

Visit early morning or late afternoon when the light sits nicely on the water. Midday can feel a bit flat. Worth a detour if you're hiking nearby, but don't expect facilities or crowds.
