Cherrytree Bank

A proper hill walk rather than a scramble, Cherrytree Bank sits in the rolling countryside south of Powys and offers decent views across Mid Wales if the weather plays ball. It's not going to take your breath away - we're talking modest elevation and the kind of walk that feels more rewarding for the effort than dramatic. The peak itself is unremarkable, just open moorland with the obligatory trig point, but on a clear day you get genuine sight lines toward the Brecon Beacons and across the Severn Valley. Most walkers allow two hours there and back, depending on fitness and how many stops you fancy. There's a car park nearby - thankfully, because trying to find roadside parking would be a pain.

This works well as part of a wider day out rather than a standalone trip. You're close enough to the caravan parks dotted around Powys - Derwen Mill is barely a mile away, and Severn Caravan Resort just over two miles - to make it an easy morning outing before heading back for lunch. Families with kids aged eight and up will manage it fine; younger ones might find it dull since there's nothing at the top except views and wind. Hikers treating it as a warm-up for bigger walks in the area will appreciate the accessibility.

Best visited in late spring or early autumn when you're not fighting crowds (because there honestly aren't many) and the visibility is typically better. Mid-summer can be muggy without much shade once you're up there.
