Groes-Pluen

Standing 512 metres above the Severn Valley, this modest Welsh hill delivers surprisingly good views for relatively little effort. Groes-Pluen won't test serious walkers but offers a proper workout for families with older children who fancy earning their tea.

The summit gives you a cracking panorama across the Cambrian Mountains and down towards the Severn's meandering course through mid-Wales. On clear days you can pick out the higher peaks to the west, though the Welsh weather being what it is, you'll want to check the forecast first.

Walking routes approach from several directions, with the most straightforward path starting from minor roads to the east. Allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top taking photos. The terrain is typical Welsh hillside - grassy slopes, occasional boggy patches, and plenty of sheep giving you the stink eye.

Families staying at nearby parks like Derwen Mill or Hidden Valley will find this makes a decent half-day adventure, especially if you pack a thermos and some sandwiches. Just don't expect Snowdonia-level drama - this is more about gentle exercise and that satisfying feeling of having climbed something proper without breaking the bank or your ankles.
