Burgess Lands

The walk up to Burgess Lands isn't long, but it rewards you with proper views across the Powys valleys once you've made the effort. It's a straightforward peak rather than anything dramatic - no scrambling or technical bits, just a solid hill walk that works brilliantly if you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted nearby, particularly Derwen Mill or Severn Caravan Resort.

On a clear day, the panorama stretches far enough to make you forget how easy the ascent actually was. On a grey one - and this is Mid Wales, so grey days happen - it feels a touch exposed and windswept. Either way, you'll likely have the summit to yourself, which beats fighting crowds at more famous peaks.

It takes about an hour or so from the base, depending on pace and how often you stop to catch your breath or take photos. Bring proper footwear because the ground gets boggy, and don't rely on mobile signal. The climb suits families with older kids and anyone after a proper walk without needing crampons or a head for heights.

If you're doing a caravan holiday in the area - and there are plenty of options within a few miles like Hidden Valley or Valley View - this pairs well with exploring the wider Powys landscape. It's not a draw in itself, but it's the kind of walk that makes an afternoon worthwhile when you're based locally. Free, obviously. No facilities at the summit though, so plan accordingly.
