Grains Farm

The working farm sits a few miles inland from Stonehaven, and it's one of those places that gives you a proper sense of what rural Aberdeenshire actually looks like beyond the coastal towns. Grains Farm operates as a proper working operation rather than a tourist attraction with gift shops and signage everywhere - which is either brilliant or a bit frustrating depending on what you're after.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - the Queen Elizabeth Park is excellent value and genuinely close by - you might swing past to see the agricultural buildings and get a feel for traditional highland farming. It's not a destination that'll keep you occupied for hours. An hour max, really, and that's if you chat to anyone about what's growing or what animals they're keeping.

Families with young kids expecting a petting zoo will be disappointed. Walkers using it as a landmark between longer routes, or people genuinely interested in Scottish farming heritage, will find it worthwhile. The landscape around here is proper rolling countryside - green, quiet, a bit windswept - which makes the detour pleasant enough if you're exploring the wider area.

Best visited in summer when you can actually see what's happening in the fields. Opening hours and admission details aren't publicly advertised, so best ring ahead or check locally when you arrive in Stonehaven. It's the kind of place that rewards a bit of curiosity rather than a planned itinerary.
