Glenton Hill

The walk up Glenton Hill rewards you with views that stretch across Aberdeenshire's rolling countryside towards the coast near Stonehaven. It's not a dramatic peak - you're looking at a modest hill rather than anything Alpine - but that's precisely why it works so well as a half-day excursion from a caravan base.

The terrain is straightforward enough for families with older children, though the path gets a bit boggy in places after rain. Allow roughly two hours for a steady climb and descent, depending on fitness. The real appeal lies in how it sits within easy reach of Stonehaven itself, a working fishing town with proper character and a decent stretch of beach. From up here you can see why people bother settling this far northeast.

It's the sort of walk that feels purposeful without demanding too much. You'll pass through moorland and spot the occasional grouse. On a clear day the visibility extends well inland. On a cloudy one, well, you get the Scottish Highlands experience in full. Bring a windproof - it catches the weather.

Stay at Stonehaven Queen Elizabeth Park or Upper Crawton Park and you're perfectly positioned for this. Pop down to Stonehaven afterwards for fish and chips or a proper coffee. The hill itself is free and open year-round, though late spring through autumn gives you the best conditions and longest daylight. Winter can be properly bleak up there, though that's not necessarily a reason to skip it.
