Glas Eilean

A ruined castle sits on a small island in Loch Gilp, visible from the shore near Lochgilphead. That's Glas Eilean - or the Green Island - and it's one of those Scottish landmarks that looks far more impressive from a distance than it feels when you're standing at the water's edge trying to work out how to get closer.

What remains is mostly stonework from a 13th-century fortress, though the exact history gets murky depending which source you read. The setting is genuinely atmospheric if you catch it on an overcast afternoon when mist clings to the water. Photographers will spend twenty minutes here and leave satisfied. Everyone else will manage five.

The practical reality: you'll view it from the shore. Unless you arrive with a boat, getting onto the island itself isn't straightforward, so manage expectations accordingly. It's free to look at, obviously. Allow half an hour maximum, really, unless you're the type who likes sitting on rocks pondering medieval Scottish politics.

It works best as a brief stop during a longer day exploring Argyll's coast - somewhere to stretch your legs between Lochgilphead and somewhere more substantial. The nearby caravan parks are decent enough bases if you're staying in the area. Lochgilphead Caravan Park is closest at just over three miles. If you're already in the region visiting proper attractions, add it to your route. If you're planning a trip around it specifically, you'd be disappointed.
