Blarbuie Wood

You'll find yourself walking through proper woodland on the outskirts of Lochgilphead - the kind of place where the path narrows, light filters through the canopy, and you actually notice the smell of damp earth and pine. Blarbuie Wood isn't a manicured attraction with visitor centres or café facilities. It's a genuine forest walk, the sort locals use when they want some fresh air without faffing about.

The woodland trails suit families with older kids and anyone after a straightforward ramble. Expect muddy patches, especially after rain, and bring proper shoes. There's something refreshing about how understated it is - no signs screaming at you, no unnecessary infrastructure. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're taking it slowly and actually looking around.

Stay at Lochgilphead Caravan Park just under a mile away and you've got easy access to a quick woodland walk without needing a proper expedition. The Pod Over By (three miles off) works too if you prefer something quieter. Both make decent bases for exploring Argyll's coastline and lochs - Blarbuie fits nicely as a half-hour detour rather than a day-long destination.

It's free, it's accessible, and it does what it says on the tin. Not dramatic, but genuinely worth the detour if you're in the area and fancy stretching your legs through actual trees rather than manicured parks.
