Beinn Bheag

The walk up Beinn Bheag from Lochgilphead takes you into proper hill country without requiring a full day's commitment. It's a modest peak - nothing that demands technical kit or special fitness - but the views across Argyll's lochs and glens justify the effort. You're looking at a couple of hours up and back, so it's the sort of outing that fits well between breakfast and lunch when you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby.

The terrain is straightforward: grassy slopes with the occasional boggy patch that you'll learn to sidestep after the first hundred metres. On a clear day you'll pick out Loch Fyne to the south and the higher hills beyond Oban inland. It's not dramatic scenery, but it's properly Scottish - open moorland with those long-distance views that make you feel like you've actually walked somewhere.

Families with children aged seven upwards will manage this without complaint. The walk's short enough that younger legs won't rebel halfway up, but it still feels like a proper achievement once you're at the summit. Lone walkers and older hikers who prefer steady gradients over scrambles will find it equally satisfying.

If you're staying at Lochgilphead Caravan Park or either of the Oban sites just down the road, this makes an obvious morning walk before heading elsewhere. There's nothing to book, no entry fees - you simply park sensibly and go. Start early if the weather's uncertain; Scottish hills can cloud in quickly.
