Gillfoot Plantation

The woodland around Gillfoot Plantation offers a proper escape into North Yorkshire's quieter side, just outside Leyburn. It's the sort of place where you wander in without fanfare - no visitor centre, no admission charge, no fussing about. Just trees, paths, and the occasional surprise of open moorland views breaking through the conifers.

Walkers will get the most from this spot. The forest has that useful mix of easy strolls and slightly more demanding routes, depending on which way you fancy heading. A couple of hours is comfortable; half a day if you're thorough. The plantation itself - predominantly conifers - isn't dramatically picturesque by Pennine standards, but it serves its purpose well on days when the weather's turning or you've had your fill of exposed ridges.

What makes it work for a park-based holiday is the proximity to Stablefell Holidays (less than a mile away, and genuinely excellent) or Cherish Glamping if you want something a touch posher. You're also close enough to Hawes Caravan Club for those after a more traditional base. From any of these, Gillfoot becomes a convenient half-morning venture - the sort of thing to tack onto a bigger day exploring Wensleydale without overthinking it.

Families with young children might find the woodland a bit samey after the first burst of enthusiasm, but teenagers or adults looking for quiet miles will appreciate the lack of crowds. Spring and autumn are your best bets for visibility and walking comfort.
