Garreglwyd Park

A short walk from Holyhead, Garreglwyd Park is one of Anglesey's quieter nature reserves - the sort of place locals know about but tourists often miss entirely. What you get here is open moorland with a decent network of walking paths that wind through heathland and rough grassland, offering views across to the coast when the weather cooperates. It's not dramatic stuff, but it works if you're after a proper stretch of the legs without the crowds.

The reserve is genuinely free to explore, and you can walk it in anything from 20 minutes to a couple of hours depending on which paths you fancy. Birdwatchers will find it worth their time, particularly in spring and autumn when migrants pass through. Families with young kids might get 30 minutes out of it before restlessness sets in - it's fairly exposed with limited shade, so don't expect much novelty. Serious walkers and nature types will find it valuable, especially if you're combining it with other spots around Anglesey.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Anglesey Outdoors and Coastal Pods are just up the road - this makes an easy half-morning outing. The reserve sits nicely as a warm-up walk before heading to Holyhead or tackling longer routes across the island. Go early on a clear day. Late afternoon light can be lovely, but the moorland gets properly exposed when the wind picks up, which happens often enough on Anglesey that you should plan accordingly.
