Foulden Hill

The walk up Foulden Hill rewards you with views across the Scottish borders that stretch for miles in every direction. It's a proper modest summit - nothing dramatic, nothing that'll take your breath away in the way Ben Nevis might - but that's rather the point. From the top, you can see right into Scotland on clear days, and the rolling farmland below has a quiet appeal that builds on you.

This is a walker's hill rather than a tourist attraction. The ascent from Berwick-upon-Tweed takes around an hour depending on your pace and which route you pick, and it's accessible enough for anyone with reasonable fitness. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find it a bit of a slog without promise of an ice cream at the summit. The terrain is moorland and grass, so it can be muddy after rain - plan accordingly.

What makes it worthwhile is the isolation. You won't find crowds or facilities here, and that's exactly why it works. The caravan sites around Berwick - Chainbridge and Haven - are decent bases if you're planning a longer stay in the area. Pop up Foulden Hill in the afternoon when the light's at its best, then drive back for supper. It's the sort of walk that makes proper sense as part of a wider exploration of the borderlands rather than as a destination in itself. Allow two to three hours door-to-door from Berwick town centre.
