Ford Moss

Ford Moss sits just outside Wooler in Northumberland, a landscape that stops you dead. It's a raised bog - one of the few genuinely wild spaces left in this corner of England, where the ground itself tells you it's different. Walk across it and your feet sink slightly into sphagnum moss, springy and alive in a way that feels prehistoric.

The site is essentially open access, free to wander, though there's no formal infrastructure or visitor centre. What you get is raw terrain. The moss is home to rare plants and birds that don't live anywhere else; it's the kind of place where you spot things and think, 'I've never seen that before.' In spring and early summer the light across the bog is extraordinary - low, golden, making the whole place glow.

Seriously, only go if you actually enjoy walking quiet ground without facilities or marked paths. It's not a destination with a cafe or gift shop. You need proper footwear and shouldn't attempt it after heavy rain - the ground becomes treacherous. Allow two hours for a proper explore, longer if you're into wildlife watching or photography.
