Goatscrag

The walk up Goatscrag is steeper than you'd think for something so modest on the map. Starting from near Wooler, you're climbing proper Cheviot moorland - rough grass, the occasional rocky scramble, and views that just keep opening up as you gain height. It's not a mountain. At around 1,750 feet, it barely qualifies as a peak by serious hillwalking standards. But that's rather the point.

From the top, the Northumberland landscape unfolds in every direction: the Cheviots rolling away south, the Border country spreading east toward the coast. On a clear day, you can see proper distance. The wind can be fierce up here - bring a jacket even in summer.

This is walker territory, frankly. Families with young legs might manage it, but anyone expecting a gentle stroll should know it's a solid couple of hours round trip with real elevation. History enthusiasts won't find much here beyond the ancient trackways underfoot. What you get is solitude and perspective - the Northumberland wilderness without the crowds of better-known peaks.

Free to access, naturally. If you're based at Highburn House Caravan Park or one of the others around Wooler, this fits nicely into a longer moorland day. Pair it with a walk around the Wooler valley and you've got a proper outdoor day sorted. Best avoided in mist - you'll see nothing and the navigation becomes fiddly. Summer and autumn work well; winter can be boggy and unforgiving.
