Routin Linn Rock Art

Bronze Age carvings cover the rock faces at Routin Linn, just outside Wooler in Northumberland. Cup and ring marks - mysterious shallow depressions pecked into the stone thousands of years ago - are scattered across the outcrop, and once you know what to look for, they're impossible to miss. The patterns repeat: a central cup surrounded by concentric rings, sometimes with a groove running through them like a tiny racetrack.

It's a proper walk to get there, though nothing punishing. The landscape around Wooler is rolling and green, and the approach gives you time to think about who carved these marks and why. Archaeological opinion splits between ritual, territorial markers, and something we've simply forgotten.
