Threestone Burn

The walk to Threestone Burn, just outside Wooler, takes you into proper Cheviot country where the landscape shifts from rolling farmland into something wilder and more elemental. This is a waterfall rather than a destination in itself - a modest cascade that tumbles over dark rock into a pool below, the kind of place that rewards the effort more for the walk than the spectacle at the end.

The approach follows a stream valley uphill, and it's genuinely pleasant. Nothing too strenuous, though the path can be boggy in places, so bring appropriate boots. Expect around an hour each way depending on fitness and how often you stop to admire the moorland views. The waterfall itself is best visited after rain when it's got some serious flow; visit in a dry spell and you might wonder why you bothered.

Families with older kids will enjoy this more than those with toddlers. It's the sort of walk where you feel properly away from things, surrounded by heather and hills, rather than ticking off a famous landmark. The nearest holiday parks - River Breamish Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is your closest option at 5.9 miles - make it easy to base yourself nearby and explore the wider Cheviot footpaths without committing to the big names.

Free, of course. No facilities at the site itself, so bring water. Go midweek in autumn when you'll have the moorland largely to yourself.
