Fonllech Menhir 5

Standing alone in rough moorland about two miles northeast of Harlech, this Bronze Age standing stone cuts an impressive figure against the Welsh sky. At roughly eight feet tall, the Fonllech Menhir makes for a proper archaeological puzzle - no one really knows why our ancestors hauled this massive chunk of local stone upright some 4,000 years ago.

History buffs and walkers will get the most from the trek out here. The stone sits on open access land, so you're free to wander up and examine it close-up, though the walk across uneven ground means it's not ideal for pushchairs or anyone with mobility issues. Kids might find it a bit underwhelming after the initial excitement - it is, after all, just a very old rock.

Allow about an hour return from the nearest parking, longer if you fancy exploring the surrounding moorland. The views back towards Harlech Castle and across Tremadog Bay are actually more impressive than the menhir itself, if I'm being honest.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Harlech - Woodlands or Castle View are closest - this makes a decent morning expedition before heading to the beach. Combine it with a visit to Harlech Castle for a proper dose of Welsh history, though the castle will likely prove far more engaging for most visitors.
